Marvin's Weekly Activity

Have a Question or an Idea for Me? Talk to Me!   I have decided to begin something I’m calling: Marvin’s Weekly Activity (let me know if you think of a better name). Every week I will learn a new activity: maybe to better myself, to pick up a new skill, or just something fun/cool. To help you understand, I want to be Bill Murray from Groundhog Day. Not at the beginning or the suicidal part, maybe a little bit of the thinking I’m God part; but mainly the part where he does a lot to learn more and to better himself. Now not only will I be learning a lot of new stuff in 2013, I will also strive to just Do More on a day-to-day basis. Go to more museums more often, watch more movies, MAKE movies, read more and just see more of Los Angeles.

The Fine Print - Now this will not always be relegated to just one thing a week. Sometimes it will be more and (hopefully not) some times it will be none. Your job is to encourage, discourage, GIVE IDEAS, give money if you’re so inclined, and if you’re in LA (or have a good way for me to leave LA) join me! But mainly I just want you to enjoy my ups and downs as I try to live 2013 by a motto of a mere two words:

Do More!

This Week Marvin Learns:  Flying

This is it, this week I take to the skies and learn the basics of flying.  I don’t think there was any other way that I could have ended this experiment of mine.  Or at least, no better way I must say.  Not many know this, but before I decided to go to college, I had ideas of joining the Air Force so I could learn how to fly and then become a commercial airline pilot upon discharge.

So they were running a bit behind and I had some time to kill before I was in the pilot’s seat.  They had me briefly familiarize myself with some text on the Cessna 150 I would be flying.  Then from there it was Wham!  Bam!  In the plane I went, Taxied, and he gave me the yoke and I took off.  We flew over UCLA and a few mountains, around the coast of Santa Monica, then back again.

Being in a small plane you feel everything.  The turbulence you get is definitely more intense than those you get flying commercially; compound that with the fact that you’re the one in control.  A crazy rush indeed.

Holy crap, I’m done.

This Week Marvin Learns:  Stock Car Racing

Going big instead of going home as this week I do 20 laps of Stock Car Racing.  I’ll be the first to tell you, I’m not even remotely a fan of NASCAR; the ideal of watching cars go in a circle just does not tickle my fancy.  Now that’s totally different when I’m the one doing the driving.

The class portion was spent with us learning the proper procedures while we’re on the track.  The reason for this being in our ears there was someone coaching us during our race.  As much as I love going fast I wish I would have pushed the car more while I was driving.  I got passed a couple of times, and it definitely hurt my ego.

Side note, unless you’re gonna drive insane DO NOT GET THE INSURANCE.  They try to sell you insurance beforehand in case you wreck/damage the car, but like most insurance, it’s not worth it in my opinion.

This Week Marvin Learns:  Glass Blowing

So many terms tossed around this week as I learn how to “catch” molten glass all for the sake of glass blowing.  My weekly activities are coming to an end and glass blowing is one I really wanted to try before it was too late.  It was only a two-hour class but I was the only one in it, so that made up for how short it was overall.

Around the studio I went in a flurry, being introduced to the kiln, workbench, glory hole (no jokes), and other things I don’t remember the exact name(s) of or how to spell.  I got to make a lot of things for the two hours allotted to me.  I made a paperweight, a Christmas tree ornament, and a drinking tumbler.  All in all, a lot learned and a decent amount created with the time given.

This Week Marvin Learns:  Rubik’s Cube

Oh boy, I’m gonna look hella smart now.  Like Will Smith from The Pursuit of Happyness only with a better mustache.  Sorry, I’ve gotten ahead of myself.  This week I learn the ins and out of the Rubik’s Cube and how to solve that mofo.  When talking with people about this activity, I found that a lot of them didn’t know that there’s a set way to solve a cube.  And the method I learned is called Roux.

My friend Ajay gets the credit for showing me how to solve, and pattern recognition.  In my opinion the most important part about solving (apart from knowing how the cube works) is recognizing what situation you’re in and knowing the algorithm.  And now that I have the fundamentals down, the next task for me is getting to know the algorithms by heart so I can solve without referencing a cheat sheet.

This Week Marvin Learns:  Jamming

I don’t think you understand how much temptation I had to just post Bob Marley’s Jammin’ and call it a day.  But I guess I won’t be a slacker and go a bit in depth.

This week I smash up a lot of fruit as I learn how to jam.  The process of which was pretty straightforward and all one really needs is time and a lot of fruit; oh and pectin, don’t forget the pectin.  I must say, while making the strawberry jam, the smell became intoxicating.  To be honest I’d make jam more often just to be around the smell again.  Nonetheless jammin was pretty cool and enjoyable.  Now go listen to Bob Marley!

This Week Marvin Learns:  Bullwhip

This week I channel my Indiana Jones as I learn how to crack and safely use a bullwhip.  My initial fear of course was that I would pull a young Indy, and end up with a nasty scar.  But all was good and this beautiful face is still just as gorgeous.

This lesson was provided by Jack, the same person who taught me how to throw knives.  I must say, learning how to throw knives before the bullwhip definitely came in handy.  A lot of the motions, the stance, and other things were very similar.  Almost immediately I was able to get it down and break the sound barrier to create that crack that we’re all familiar with hearing.

This Week Marvin Learns:  Gun Cleaning

No correlation with Veterans Day intended, but this week I embrace the 2nd Amendment as I learn how to clean and dissemble a few firearms.  My friend Matt (and owner of the guns) has been telling me to do this since I started learning new things, so this week I take him up on it.  Now let me say, I’m not really a big gun guy, though I do like to shoot but probably won’t be purchasing one anytime soon.  But like many other things I’ve learned, I feel knowing how to maintain a firearm is a pretty solid skill to have.

And thankfully Matt has three different types of firearms, thus I was able to experience each.  For the non-gun enthusiasts, the three shown above are: a Marlin .22 rifle, a Mossberg 500 12g shotgun, and a CZ75B 9mm handgun.  I’ve shot all these guns before, but never got to delve inside till now.  It was pretty straightforward, and I likened it to taking pens apart.  Something I did a ton of in school.
